What is Guggulu?

By breaking any part of the Guggulu tree, a kind of fragrance comes out from it. The gum obtained from this tree is called Guggulu. In Ayurvedic texts, descriptions of these five types are found - Mahishaksha, Mahaneel, Kumud, Padma and Hiranya Guggulu. Mahishaaksha Guggulu is black in color like a bumblebee. Mahaneel Guggulu is blue in colour, Kumud Guggulu is of color similar to Kumud fruit, Padma Guggulu is red in color similar to ruby and Hiranyaksha Guggulu is golden i.e. with luster similar to gold. It is a 1.2-1.8 m high, branched, tree with small thorns. It is thick, fragrant, multi-coloured, burns in fire and melts in sunlight, and when poured into hot water, it becomes like milk. Guggulu, which is used in practical use, is a light yellow colored extract, which is obtained from the bark, it is opaque, blood-brown in color and gray i.e. brownish-black in color. Guggul is like gum which is hot and bitter in nature. The new Guggulu is smooth, like gold, pure, fragrant, yellow in color and looks like ripe blackberries. Apart from this, Naveen Guggulu is slippery, removes vata, pitta and phlegm, increases dhatu and sperm count and is a potency enhancer. Old Guggulu is bitter, pungent, dry, foul smelling and colourless. It helps in curing ulcers, indigestion, stones, leprosy, pimples or acne, lymph nodes, piles, goiter, worms, cough, dropsy, spleen related problems, mouth and eye related diseases. Guggulu greens are sweet, bitter, cold in nature, dry and reduce phlegm. Guggulu being full of sweet juice, Guggulu reduces vata. Due to its astringent juice, it helps in removing bile and due to its Tikta juice, it helps in reducing phlegm. Black colored Guggulu is beneficial in Raktapitta (bleeding from nose and ears) and yellow colored Guggulu is beneficial in reducing Kaphapitta. Benefits of white colored Guggulu: It is used in the treatment of Vata and Pittaja related diseases.
